Pediatric Surgery

The Department of Pediatric Surgery provides high quality healthcare services to neonates, infants, children and adolescents, aged 0 to 18 years, suffering from conditions requiring surgical treatment, in a safe and friendly environment.

The Department, staffed by Pediatric surgeons with multiannual experience in Pediatric Surgery and advanced training acquired in the largest centers abroad, manages and treats the whole spectrum of congenital deformities and acquired diseases.

Surgical approach in minor surgical fields, with great enlargements and bloodlessly, as well as endoscopic techniques (laparoscopic, thoracoscopic, transurethral, transanal, etc), i.e. minimally invasive treatment, offer the least possible tissue damage, resulting in the reduction of intraoperative and postoperative complications and the best disease outcome.

Surgical procedures are performed on the digestive, respiratory, urinary, genital and musculoskeletal system of neonates, infants, children and adolescents and are localized in the chest, abdomen, soft tissues, cervix, anorectal area and external genitalia. They are mainly congenital or acquired defects, anatomic or functional, inflammatory diseases, neoplasms, traumas and burns. Complex surgical procedures are carried out in Operating Rooms which are equipped with state-of-the-art medical equipment. All Emergencies are managed on a 24-hour basis, regardless of their severity level.

A Pediatric Surgeon’s participation in the prenatal diagnoses team (Gynecologist, Geneticist, Neonatologist, Radiologist, etc) is of crucial importance. The team informs and advises the parents on their child’s condition, determines the management of a surgical condition, after the neonate is born, informs the parents of their child’s preoperative and postoperative state as well as on his/her medical status progress later in life.

The Pediatric Anesthesiologists at our Hospital are extensively experienced and have advanced training according to the current trends in pediatric anesthesia. To deliver anesthesia to a young patient, a Pediatric Anesthesiologist approaches the child in a friendly manner -parents are always present- to ensure the least intraoperative stress possible and the best postoperative outcome.

The assistance of the Pediatric Polyvalent Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and the close collaboration with physicians of several medical specialties and sub-specialties, such as Pediatric cardiac surgeon, Pediatric orthopedics specialist, Neurosurgeon, Pediatric endocrinologist, Pediatric cardiologist, Pediatric pulmonologist, Pediatric neurologist, Pediatric oncologist, Pediatric nephrologist, Pediatric radiologist, Pediatric medical oncologist, Pediatric psychologist, along with the well-trained nursing and paramedical staff (Physical therapist, Ergotherapist, Speech therapist), deliver comprehensive management and treatment and an excellent outcome, especially to those suffering from rare or complex surgical conditions.

The collaboration of the Department of Pediatric Surgery with the Neonatologists and the specialized nursing practitioners at the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) is of crucial importance. More than 100 high-risk surgical procedures are annually performed on NICU admitted neonates, covering the entire range of neonatal surgery, such as digestive tract atresias (esophageal atresia, duodenal atresia, intestinal atresia), anorectal anomalies (rectal atresia, etc), urinary tract defects -bladder exstrophy, abdominal wall defects (gastro fission, exomphalos), diaphragmatic hernias, etc.

Our well-organized One Day Clinic (ODC) manages a considerable number of diseases and a significant number of patients, leading to:

  • Patient's stay in the hospital for just a few hours
  • Strong decrease of the child being exposed to nosocomial infections
  • Less time away from his/her parents and school
  • Less stress both for the child and his/her parents
  • Fewer disturbances on family routine
  • Minimization of hospital costs (fewer burdens on the family budget)
