Neurosurgical Management of Rare Condition in a Young Patient

IASO Children’s Hospital: Neurosurgical Management of Rare Condition in a Young Patient

On 09/03/2017, a team of neurosurgeons at IASO Children’s Hospital, under the guidance of Mr. Vasileios A. Zerris, Professor of Neurosurgery, surgically treated a 3-year-old boy who was diagnosed with skull base tumor and accompanying fistula.

The young patient had a congenital small skin lesion on the forehead bottom, between the eyes. However, ever since he was an infant, episodes of fluid outflow were observed on this specific area. The brain MRI study revealed a benign tumor inside the skull, which was externally communicating with the skin lesion on the forehead through a fistula. This specific, rare condition results in gradual skull bone destruction – the bone was already thinned in our case – and subsequent brain insulation loss. While the disease progresses, life-threatening meningitis occurs that can cause irreversible neurological problems. In addition, due to the specific characteristics of the tumor in question, our young patient suffered frequent episodes of severe headache.

The surgery, which was of high difficulty, included complex craniotomy on the forehead and orbital area with total tumor resection and localized bone reconstruction. At the same time, using an applicable surgical technique, we achieved complete removal of the fistula and ensured present and future protection of the brain structures.

The procedure was totally successful. The patient, following short hospital stay, was discharged presenting excellent clinical picture and having the best prospects for a normal life.
