IASO breaks ground by supporting male and female cancer patients

At IASO, the multidisciplinary team approach of the patients by physicians specializing in the diagnosis and treatment of cancer such as Gynecologists, Surgeons, Medical Oncologists, Hematologists, Radiotherapists and Diagnostic Radiologists, allows for the best possible treatment of all patients, especially those of reproductive age who wish to have children without threatening their health and without reducing their life expectancy.

The appropriate and timely education constitutes the first and most important step in saving precious time. That was the primary conclusion of the 1st Scientific Meeting successfully organized by the Hellenic Society for Fertility Preservation (EEDA), titled “Hope for the Future”, under the auspices of the 1st and 2nd Departments of Obstetrics and Gynecology of the University of Athens, on Saturday 19 March 2016 in the Events Hall at IASO Clinic. The Meeting was graced with the presence of the world-renowned scientists Messrs Pasquale Patrizio, Professor at Yale University, USA, Chair of the International Society for Fertility Preservation and Dominique de Ziegler, Professor at Université Paris Descartes (Paris V), France.

Fertility Preservation Programs Institute of Life – IASO

IASO provides integrated health services in the field of gynecological oncology and breaks ground in Fertility Preservation through the sophisticated genetic material cryopreserving techniques, offered at the Medically Assisted Reproduction Unit, Institute of Life – IASO.

Specifically, young female cancer patients are now able to cryopreserve their ovarian tissue via vitrification, immediately after they are diagnosed with cancer and prior to being subjected to chemotherapies and radiotherapies. Using the specific techniques, women are now given a second chance in motherhood, as soon as they are disease-free.

This fact also changes the perspective in which the patients themselves face cancer and boosts their psychology to such extent, that their psychological status is considered a significant factor affecting the good outcome of the disease and even its cure.

Respectively, young males diagnosed with cancer, and immediately after their diagnosis, can cryopreserve their sperm and testicular tissue via the Testicular sperm extraction (TESE) technique.

Institute of Life – IASO has developed the entire essential infrastructure and conditions to provide important life choices in cancer survivors, who were up to now deprived of the dream of becoming parents using their own genetic material.

Moreover, the Fertility Preservation Programs, with the innovative eggs, embryos and ovarian tissue cryopreservation techniques applied in our Unit, enable all women who wish to prolong their fertility status on social grounds, to procreate at a later age.
