Vegan Maternity Care

Vegan Maternity Care

The Vegan Maternity Care Department provides comprehensive information, support and monitoring for vegetarian and strict vegetarian - vegan pregnant women. It is a known fact that the vegan diet contributes to the smooth outcome of pregnancy and more specifically, by maintaining a healthy body weight, the risks of developing gestational diabetes and preeclampsia are reduced and an increased rate of undergoing a caesarean section is avoided.

The Department consists of all the necessary specialties, such as an Obstetrician/Gynecologist and a team of specialized nutritionists from the IASO Nutritional Support and Dietetics Department who are here to support, empower and encourage the women who turn to us.

We've long known that a diet focused on plant-based foods - fruits, vegetables, whole grains, legumes, nuts, and seeds - significantly reduces the risk of heart disease, type 2 diabetes, obesity, and certain types of cancer. Even in the research on the Mediterranean diet, the benefits of the Mediterranean diet originate mainly from plants.

In fact, a low-fat, plant-based diet is the only diet that has been shown to actually reverse established coronary artery disease. It has also been shown to reverse type 2 diabetes, enable effective weight loss which is maintained, without portion control or exercise, and suspends the progression of early-stage prostate cancer, according to research.

In addition, an unprocessed Vegan diet is able to and actually supports mental health by affecting the health of our gut bacteria, which produce many of the neurotransmitters/hormones that are active in the brain.

Which are our goals:

  • Information

It is particularly important to be aware of the new medical developments, as well as the advances in the field of healthy nutrition and adoption of a truly beneficial lifestyle through a vegetarian diet.

  • Inspiration - Encouragement

For more and more people to learn about the enormous benefits of a vegetarian diet. Those are:

    1. Increase of energy levels during daily activities
    2. Increase in life expectancy, with a simultaneous increase in the quality of these years
    3. Decrease in cardiovascular events
    4. Decrease of type 2 diabetes
    5. Reduced rates of development of certain types of cancer (breast, intestinal, prostate)
  • Realization

Another very important goal of ours is to make the patient realize the enormous power she has in order to achieve the best outcome for her case. For example, women about to give birth come to realize that only through the active participation of both themselves and their partners, will they achieve the best possible outcome for them and their baby, and therefore the couple must have a bigger amount of responsibility than they may have initially thought. We are looking for people who can take on an interactive role, after being fully and objectively informed by health professionals. We consider the doctor-patient relationship to be of utmost importance. The doctor is called upon to assist in the active effort of the patient to achieve her goals.

  • Primordial and primary prevention

When we refer to the primordial prevention of gynecologic cancer, mainly breast cancer, we mean avoiding lifestyles that contribute to increased risk, and when we refer to primary prevention, we mean the control of risk factors.

Research shows that women who consume fiber, vitamins, minerals and trace elements contained in unprocessed plant-based foods as much as possible, have a lower risk of developing cancer with vitamin C, beta-carotene and Selenium competing for the lion's share for this purpose. In particular, fiber consumption has the most important role in the prevention of the development of breast cancer, as they help to eliminate excessive estrogen levels.

The Vegan Maternity Care Department is addressed to:

  • All women who are characterized by open-mindedness and broadened spiritual horizons, who believe that human are psychosomatic entities and therefore the treatment of their health should be done through a holistic approach, in complete harmony of course with the valuable knowledge of classical medicine, so that the best possible result is achieved.
  • Those who follow a vegetarian diet.
  • Women who follow a strict vegetarian - Vegan diet.

IASO's contribution to supporting a new generation of citizens who are sensitized and involved in spreading the vegan diet and lifestyle and informing the public by projecting the model and beauty of a peaceful life and diet, is more important than ever. We are here to support the health of patients, personnel and visitors by providing a variety of plant-based meals and education, with empathy for the health and sustainability of the planet.
