06/09/2019 - IASO introduces pioneering transoral thyroid surgery leaving no visible scarring

The first parathyroidectomy at an Athens hospital was performed at IASO using the Transoral Endoscopic Thyroidectomy Vestibular Approach (TOETVA).

The Transoral Endoscopic Thyroidectomy Vestibular Approach (TOETVA) is an innovative method used to treat conditions of the thyroid and parathyroid glands with minimal hospitalization and rapid recovery. It has been widely adopted around the world, not only for achieving results equivalent to those using the open incision method, but also for its outstanding aesthetic outcome. The procedure is performed endoscopically through the mouth, with no external incisions through the skin, so that there are no scars visible in the neck area. It is a safe technique provided it is applied by surgeons with expertise in thyroid and parathyroid surgery who are well-versed in advanced endoscopic procedures.

The procedure was performed by surgeon Dimitrios Floros MD and his team. Dr. Floros was trained and certified in the specific procedure at the Police General Hospital in Bangkok, under the personal tutelage of surgeon Angkoon Anuwong MD, who pioneered the technique worldwide.

The surgery at IASO was performed on a 51-year-old female patient with primary hyperparathyroidism as a result of a single 2 cm adenoma on the lower right parathyroid gland. The patient’s post-operative recovery was smooth and without complications, and she was released the following day.

IASO is currently one of the few specialized centers in the world performing this groundbreaking procedure, faithfully applying the principles it has set with accountability, responsibility and respect for the patient.
