IASO General Clinic: Total success in the first two transcatheter mitral valve repairs
On Friday, March 20th, 2026, and Monday, April 6th, 2026, the first two transcatheter mitral valve repairs (TEER, Transcatheter Edge-to-Edge Repair) by using the MitraClip procedure were performed with total success at IASO General Clinic, following the hospital’s recent licensing as a Center for Transcatheter Repair of Mitral Valve Regurgitation. This new transcatheter repair method is performed via percutaneous access, without the need for open surgery.
According to both European and American Cardiology Guidelines, it is the treatment of choice for patients with functional mitral regurgitation or those at high surgical risk. The TEER technique with MitraClip G5 offers significant advantages, such as rapid recovery, reduced risk of undergoing open surgery, and effective improvement of cardiac function in high-risk patients.
The procedures were carried out by Interventional Cardiologist and Professor Emeritus of Cardiology at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (NKUA), Mr. Emmanouil Vavouranakis, Director of the 4th Cardiology Clinic, together with his specialized medical team of interventional cardiologists, Mr. Konstantinos Kalogeras and Mr. Anastasios Marathonitis, under continuous transesophageal echocardiographic guidance by Ms. Carmen Moldovan, Cardiologist and Associate of the 4th Cardiology Clinic.
The success of the procedure is attributed to the entire personnel of the Cardiac Catheterization Lab, as well as the nursing staff of IASO General Clinic, who contributed decisively to the smooth course of the procedure and the safety of the patient.
