The Distinguished Scientist Stylianos Antonarakis at IASO

IASO, within the framework of the Group's Scientific Program, is honored and pleased to host Mr. Stylianos Antonarakis, Professor Emeritus of Genetic Medicine at the University of Geneva, who will deliver a lecture on the topic “The human genome in health and disease”, on Friday, May 31st, 2024, at 12:30 p.m., at IASO Hospital’s Event Hall (37-39 Kifissias Ave., 15123, Maroussi).

Professor Stylianos Antonarakis is a physician and academic researcher who is studying the human genome and its importance in biology and the myriad diseases that originate from it. He is an active Professor Emeritus of the University of Geneva in Switzerland. He was a Professor at the Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, after his university studies in Athens. His research has focused on inherited monogenic diseases, their diagnosis, pathophysiology and treatment. Mr. Antonarakis and his research laboratory discovered the etiology of many hereditary disorders, such as Thalassemia, hemophilia and over 40 other disorders. He was responsible for sequencing chromosome 21 of the human genome, both in its initial stage and throughout this great biological program. He discovered nearly all the genes of chromosome 21 and extensively studied the diversity of the genome that predisposes to human disease. He studied trisomy 21 at great length and discovered the origin of the third chromosome in this pathological condition. He created World Down Syndrome Day (March 21st), which helps integrate fellow men having this condition into society and promotes research. He has published hundreds of scientific papers and is one of the most influential scientists on a global basis. Dozens of his students are professors at renowned universities. He has been awarded the Allan Award in 2019, which is the highest recognition of genetic research worldwide. One of his students, Professor Gregg Semenza, was awarded the Nobel Prize in 2019 for findings that were partially made in Professor Antonarakis' laboratory. He was President of the European Society of Human Genetics (ESHG) and the international Human Genome Organisation (HUGO). He has worked towards genomic equity in all states of the world.
