IASO General Clinic inaugurates its Structural Heart Disease Department with its first successful TAVI procedure

IASO General Clinic proudly announces the launch of its Structural Heart Disease Department, which commenced its operation on January 9th, 2026, in state-of-the-art facilities fully equipped with cutting-edge technology, following official licensing by the Central Board of Health (KESY).

The new Department represents another strategic step by the Clinic toward the provision of specialized, high-level cardiology services equivalent to those of leading international centers, with an emphasis on minimally invasive techniques and maximum patient safety.

A significant milestone for the Department was its first successful procedure, performed on a 92-year-old patient who underwent transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) on January 9th, 2026. The procedure was carried out by Interventional Cardiologists Dr. Giorgos Katsimagklis and Dr. Antonis Mastrokostopoulos, both certified by the Ministry of Health to perform structural heart disease procedures, with multiannual experience and training at recognized centers both in Greece and abroad.

The procedure was performed with absolute success. The postoperative course was smooth, and after only three days of hospitalization, the patient was discharged on January 12th, 2026, in excellent clinical condition. This outcome highlights the advantages of modern, minimally invasive methods even in patients of advanced age.

The doctors who participated in the procedure were: Dr. Vasileios Kyriakopoulos, Anesthesiologist, IASO General Clinic, and Ms. Evangelia Christoforatou, MD, PhD, Cardiologist, Director, Cardiac Ultrasound Department, and Scientific Director, Pacemaker – Defibrillator Center, IASO General Clinic. Simultaneous cardiac surgical coverage was provided by Dr. Ioannis Chlorogiannis, MD, PhD, Cardiac Surgeon, Coordinating Director, 1st Cardiac Surgery Clinic, IASO General Clinic, and Dr. Georgios Anastasiadis, Cardiac Surgeon, Consultant, 1st Cardiac Surgery Clinic, IASO General Clinic. Vascular surgical coverage was provided by Dr. Antonios Papageorgiou, Vascular Surgeon, Director, 2nd Vascular Surgery Clinic, IASO General Clinic, Head, Vascular Surgery Department, IASO Children’s Hospital. The patient remained in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) for 24 hours and spent the remaining two days in the ward. The contribution of the specialized nursing personnel and the technologists of the ICU’s Cardiac Catheterization Lab, and the inpatient ward was of great importance.

IASO General Clinic remains firmly committed to its mission: to provide innovative, safe, and personalized medical solutions, focusing on people and their quality of life.
