Clinical Interest
The academic and clinical career of Dr. Ioannis Georgopoulos is oriented toward minimally invasive and robotic surgery. He holds a Postgraduate Diploma from NKUA in the Master’s Program “Advanced Laparoscopic and Bariatric Surgery” and has completed advanced training in minimally invasive and robotic pediatric surgery at IRCCS Sant’Orsola, Alma Mater Studiorum – Università di Bologna, one of the leading European reference centers in this field. He is Treasurer and founding member of the Hellenic Society of Minimally Invasive Pediatric Surgery (ΕΕΕΠΕ), actively contributing to its institutional development and to the promotion of minimally invasive pediatric surgery in Greece.
In addition, he has a longstanding academic and clinical interest in Inflammatory Bowel Diseases, namely Crohn’s disease and Ulcerative Colitis. He holds a PhD from NKUA with a doctoral dissertation focusing on Crohn’s disease and has significant experience in the surgical management of pediatric patients with Inflammatory Bowel Disease through collaboration with the Gastroenterology Department of the General Children’s Hospital of Athens “Aghia Sophia”, the largest national reference center for these conditions, as well as collaborations with corresponding adult referral centers and specialized adult surgeons, including the Aretaieion Hospital. He is among the few Greek Pediatric Surgeons providing minimally invasive surgical management for these conditions.

Research
The research activity of Ioannis Georgopoulos focuses on bridging basic science with clinical pediatric surgical practice, as well as on clinically applied research, aiming at the continuous improvement of pediatric surgical care through scientifically documented and innovative approaches. His doctoral work at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens investigated the role of mechanical factors, particularly intestinal stenosis, in shaping the inflammatory response and disease progression of Crohn’s disease in experimental models, contributing to the understanding of mechanisms influencing surgical strategy in complex inflammatory bowel diseases.
In parallel, his clinical research focuses on the evaluation and development of minimally invasive techniques in pediatric surgery, including laparoscopic gastrostomies, management of obstructive gastrointestinal diseases, and selected congenital anomalies. This work has been presented at international conferences and published in peer-reviewed international journals, contributing to the dissemination of practices that reduce surgical trauma, accelerate recovery, and improve long-term outcomes for children and their families.
Within the framework of his research activity, he has served as an elected member of the Scientific Council of the General Children’s Hospital of Athens “Aghia Sophia” (2018–2021). He actively participates in the design, implementation, and supervision of numerous clinical research studies conducted annually at the same institution, which are published in international journals and/or presented at national and international scientific conferences. He has also contributed to the supervision of four doctoral dissertations in the field of Surgery and Pediatric Surgery at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens and the University of Patras.
At the same time, he actively collaborates and co-authors joint research projects with internationally renowned Pediatric Surgeons such as Mario Lima (Bologna, Italy), Sameh Shehata (Alexandria, Egypt), and Dariuz Patkowski (Worklaw, Poland).
Finally, Dr. Georgopoulos serves as a reviewer for distinquished international journals such as Digestive Diseases and Sciences, The American Journal of Case Reports, Scientific Reports (Springer Nature), Frontiers in Medicine, Frontiers in Pediatrics, among others.
