1st Pulmonology Department
PulmonologyThe 1st Pulmonology Department of IASO Thessalias is a fully organized department, staffed by medical personnel under continuous training and with extensive experience in the entire spectrum of respiratory diseases. The excellent collaboration between
the doctors of the Department and the other health professionals of IASO Thessalias guarantees the best possible diagnostic and therapeutic result, in the fastest possible time. Constant contact with our patients, dedication, politeness and good mood
are the main characteristics of our way of working.
Medical services are provided 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, for pulmonary emergencies, while at the same time a regular pulmonary treatment office is operating, every day from Monday
to Friday, in the morning and afternoon, by appointment.
The 1st Pulmonology Department is able to treat acute and urgent conditions of the respiratory system, such as:
- Acute respiratory failure
- Lower respiratory tract infections (pneumonia, tuberculosis, etc.)
- Exacerbations of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease
- Hemoptysis
- Bronchial asthma exacerbations
- Exacerbations of idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis
- Pulmonary embolism
- Pleural effusion
Τhe remarkable experience of the clinic's doctors in the use of non-invasive ventilation (NIV) is worth mentioning.
In addition, the pulmonology treatment office of IASO Thessalias has a consultative role and closely monitors patients with
chronic respiratory diseases, such as:
- Bronchial asthma
- Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease
- Obstructive sleep apnea
- Bronchiectasis
- Pulmonary fibrosis
- Lung cancer
- Sarcoidosis
The above conditions also include lung diseases related to other systemic diseases (rheumatoid arthritis, systemic lupus erythematosus, Sjogren's syndrome, other vasculitis types, neuromuscular diseases), as well as chronic pleural effusions.
Finally, in the pulmonology treatment office, patients are monitored after an acute infection of the respiratory system, such as pneumonia and SARS-CoV2 (COVID-19) infection. It is worth noting the consultative role of the pulmonology department’s
doctors in assessing nodules or other lung lesions and guiding patients for definitive diagnosis and treatment.
Our human-centered philosophy focuses on preventive medicine during the operation of the pulmonology treatment office, putting
special emphasis on it. Considerable attention is given, with a modern scientific approach, to people who wish to stop smoking, as well as to the early detection of lung cancer, in specific age groups, according to the guidelines of the European Society
of Pulmonology (ERS).
The fully equipped Pulmonology Treatment Office, having modern medical technological equipment for performing pulse oximetry, spirometry, plethysmography-diffusion, arterial blood gas analysis and lung ultrasound,
as well as the Sleep Disorders Study Laboratory, have a special role in all of the above.
Bronchoscopy Department
IASO Thessalias has a modern Bronchoscopy Department where bronchoscopies are performed on patients with a wide range of pulmonary diseases (lung shadowing, chronic cough, recurrent pneumonias, investigation
of interstitial lung disease, hemoptysis, etc.) in order to obtain endobronchial biopsies, as well as for cytological and microbiological examinations of the bronchial secretions.
In fact, in patients with specific indications (mediastinal
lymphadenopathy), endobronchial ultrasound (EBUS-TBNA) is used to obtain cytological material for examination, with the aim of diagnosing/staging lung tumors or diagnosing other pulmonary diseases.
