Versius® robotic system by CMR Surgical

The innovative next-generation surgical robotic system, Versius® by CMR Surgical – the global manufacturer of medical robotic systems based in Cambridge, England, has been a key tool in robotic surgery with installed systems and successful surgeries throughout the world. In Europe, following countries such as Italy, France, Belgium, England, Versius® arrived in Greece for the first time, at IASO Thessalias.

The Versius robotic system covers a wide range of general surgery, urology, gynecology, abdominal and thoracic surgical procedures and is operated by exclusively specialized surgeons, trained with absolute precision and certified to the highest standards and requirements at a global basis.

Which procedures can be performed using robotic surgery?

  • Upper GI, Stomach and Esophagus Surgery

Conditions such as gastroesophageal reflux disease, hiatal hernia, stomach and esophageal cancer are treated.

  • Bowel Surgery

Conditions of the small and large intestine are treated with exceptional surgical precision. Surgical treatment of acute appendicitis, colorectal cancer and diverticular disease is also performed.

  • Liver, Gallbladder and Pancreas Surgery

Operations such as gallbladder removal, surgery for tumors of the liver, pancreas, spleen and adrenal glands are performed with absolute precision.

  • Reconstruction Surgery for Abdominal Wall Hernias

Robotic surgery is the future of surgery in the treatment of abdominal wall conditions (abdominal wall robotic surgery), achieving minimally invasive and definitive surgical treatment in cases of inguinal, umbilical, epigastric and incisional hernia.

  • Prostate and Kidney Surgery

The use of the robotic system in prostate surgeries ensures important functional parameters, erectile capacity and urinary continence. It allows the resection of small renal tumors with minimal trauma to the kidney.

  • Gynecologic Surgery

The vast majority of gynecologic surgical procedures can be performed using robotic surgery. Surgical treatment of endometrial cancer, deep infiltrating endometriosis, oophorectomy/salpingectomy, myomectomy, hysterectomy, urogynecology procedures for uterine prolapse, pelvic lymphadenectomy, sentinel lymph node dissection.

  • Thoracic Surgery Procedures

Robotic surgery in the service of lung cancer treatment, via lobectomy procedures.

The benefits of robotic surgery, which the patients of IASO Thessalias are able to enjoy, are enormous. Versius' high-resolution 3D imaging enables surgeons to operate with incomparably greater precision when performing complex surgical procedures, minimizing the risk of complications to occur.

Most important benefits:

  • faster recovery times
  • less scarring
  • reduction of pain
  • reduced hospital stay
  • reduced blood loss
  • faster comeback to everyday life

Certified surgeons in the Versius® Surgical Robotic System at IASO Thessalias

The Team of the 1st Surgery Clinic of IASO Thessalias
General Surgeon, Director, 1st Surgery Clinic, IASO Thessalias

“The future of surgery has arrived at IASO Thessalias. The installation of the first Versius robotic system in Greece is a fact and we are particularly proud as our patients will be the first to have access to robotic surgery services, without having to leave their homeplace.”

General Surgeon, Consultant, 1st Surgery Clinic, IASO Thessalias

“Robotic surgery is a minimally invasive surgical technique that uses specialized technology so as to provide precise care even in hard-to-reach areas. The benefits that patients enjoy include: reduced blood loss, minimization of the length of hospital stay, reduced postoperative pain, faster comeback to everyday life, smaller incisions and a better aesthetic result with a parallel reduction in postoperative infections, more accurate excision of malignant lesions.”

Thoracic Surgeon, Scientific Associate, IASO Thessalias

“Versius, by the global company CMR Surgical, is a robot-assisted surgery system that arrived for the first time in Central Greece, to offer a minimally invasive approach to the lungs and mediastinum. Through small incisions between the patient's ribs, thanks to Versius' uniquely small and modular design, we can intervene in the thoracic cavity with precision and surgical dexterity, taking advantage of the system's small, fully-wristed instruments and the excellent high-resolution 3D imaging it offers us.”

The Team of the Liver, Pancreas and Bile Duct Surgery Department of IASO Thessalias
General Surgeon, Professor of Surgery, University of Thessaly, Scientific Associate, IASO Thessalias

“Esophagus, stomach, liver, colon procedures can now be performed with great precision. We are very happy and satisfied that we have the Versius system at our disposal through IASO Thessalias, the latest robotic system with which we can achieve the best possible result for our patients.”

General Surgeon, Director, Liver, Pancreas and Bile Duct Surgery Department, IASO Thessalias

“With the help of the Versius robotic console and state-of-the-art instruments, we make minimal incisions that, with the use of a camera, provides us 3D imaging of the surgical field magnified up to 10 times. This allows us to be more precise in our movements which is deemed necessary to minimize the likelihood of human error and complications, especially in complex surgical procedures, such as those of the stomach, colon and liver.”

The Team of the 1st Urology Clinic of IASO Thessalias
Urologic Surgeon, Director, 1st Urology Clinic, IASO Thessalias

“With the use of the robot and 3D technology we have the ability to view and better distinguish the surgical field. In operations for kidney cancer and especially in partial nephrectomy, i.e. the removal of small kidney tumors, we have excellent postoperative results. Regarding prostate cancer, we identify the tissues with clarity, we can better preserve the nerves that control the erectile function and create an anastomosis with the goal of patient continence. At IASO Thessalias, we are taking a big step into the future of Robotic Urology, for the benefit of all patients.”

Urologic Surgeon, Deputy Director, 1st Urology Clinic, IASO Thessalias

“Versius can support all Urologic surgeries, major and minor. It provides the Surgeon with 3D vision and millimeter accuracy in tissue preparation. In particular, it allows the resection of small kidney tumors with minimal trauma to the kidney. It is important to mention that it allows the preservation of the nerves that control the erectile function during prostatectomy, where indicated, as well as the maximum length of the urethra, achieving early urinary continence.”

The Team of the Gynecologic Oncology Department of IASO Thessalias
Gynecologic Oncology Specialist – Breast Surgeon, Head, Gynecologic Oncology Department, IASO Thessalias, Associate, Breast Center, IASO Thessalias

“The gynecologic surgery specialist, using the technologies offered by this particular robotic system, can perform even the most complex surgeries with millimeter accuracy, thus ensuring an excellent surgical result. Our team’s is aiming to provide top-quality services, as we believe that every woman deserves the best. We are delighted that as the only team certified to perform gynecologic surgeries using Versius, we can now take another step towards perfection, for the benefit of our patients.”

Obstetrician-Gynecologist, Scientific Associate, IASO Thessalias

“Besides the well-known benefits of laparoscopy, such as short hospital stay, low blood loss, fewer adhesions, lower morbidity rates, it also provides greater precision of surgical movements, thanks to 3D technology and better exposure of the surgical field in complex surgeries. The flexibility of the Versius robotic system allows for upper abdominal surgical procedures, such as paraaortic lymphadenectomy, endometriosis removal from septum, to be performed with exceptional ease.”
