First Atrial Fibrillation Ablation procedures in Central Greece performed at IASO Thessalias
A new era in the treatment of cardiac arrhythmias has begun in Central Greece, following the successful completion of the region’s first catheter ablation procedures for atrial fibrillation at IASO Thessalias.
The procedures were performed by Interventional Electrophysiologist Dimitrios A. Iatropoulos, in collaboration with Anesthesiologist Dimos Charalampidis, Cardiologist Argyris Gkarmpounis and the highly trained nursing and technical staff of the Hemodynamics Laboratory.
Catheter ablation is based on the well-established principle that, in most patients, atrial fibrillation originates from electrical activity within the pulmonary veins. By electrically isolating these veins from the left atrium, the arrhythmia can no longer be triggered. During these procedures, the team applied modern cryoballoon technology, which uses controlled freezing to safely and effectively isolate the pulmonary veins.
Cryoballoon ablation is associated with high success rates, shorter procedure times and rapid patient recovery. The introduction of this advanced treatment further enhances the cardiovascular services available at IASO Thessalias and expands access to innovative cardiac care throughout Central Greece.
