Modern rehabilitation in the ICU: a key factor in patient outcomes
A scientific lecture dedicated to the rehabilitation of critically ill patients highlighted the growing importance of early and structured rehabilitation within the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).
The lecture was delivered by Markos N. Sgantzos, Physiatrist, Professor of Anatomy and Rehabilitation Medicine at the University of Thessaly and Scientific Director of the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at IASO Thessalias. The session was moderated by Dr Apostolos Komnos.
The presentation emphasized rehabilitation as a process that begins from the very first day of ICU admission, aiming to preserve functionality, prevent complications and facilitate a patient's return to daily life. Evidence demonstrating the benefits of early rehabilitation in reducing complications, shortening hospitalization and improving long-term outcomes was discussed extensively.
Particular attention was given to ICU-acquired weakness, post-ICU syndrome and the essential role of the multidisciplinary team in designing individualized rehabilitation programmes.
