IASO Thessalias: Medical Event on Infertility

The public of our region observed with great interest the latest medical advances at the medical conference organized by IASO Thessalias regarding infertility, a topic more relevant than ever, as it currently concerns about 15% of couples of reproductive age worldwide and approximately 300,000 couples in Greece.

During the event, which was coordinated by Professor Ioannis E. Messinis, Professor Emeritus of Obstetrics and Gynecology, University of Thessaly, Former Rector of the University of Thessaly, Scientific Director of IASO Thessalias, the medical associates of IASO Thessalias spoke both in medical terms and about the social ramifications concerning the issue of infertility in men and women

In particular, Nikolaos Kolitsas, Urologic Surgeon – Andrologist, Associate of IASO Thessalias, while analyzing male infertility, referred to the fact that the male factor is involved at a rate of at least 50%. Despite the fact that over time, it has ceased to be a taboo and to only concern women, as it was previously believed, men still refuse to voluntarily proceed with fertility testing (9.5%). He also talked about the possibility of genetic disorders that male infertility could be concealing, the evaluation, early detection and treatment that may prevent erectile dysfunction, osteoporosis, heart attacks and strokes.

For his part, Robert Najdecki, Obstetrician-Gynecologist, Scientific Director of the Assisted Reproduction Department of IASO Thessalias, Co-Founder & Scientific Director of Assisting Nature, presented the data and the causes for female fertility decline. He also analyzed the medical examinations necessary for hormone fertility screening, such as measuring and evaluating the biochemical marker of ovarian reserve, AMH (Anti-Mullerian Hormone), FSH (Follicular Stimulating Hormone) and LH (Luteinizing Hormone) and the screening process. He mentioned the new advances and the possibilities that science now provides for fertility preservation, which nowadays enable women to choose when to have children and plan for it to happen, even at an older age, with genetic material of good quality. He spoke about the innovative method of egg vitrification, which has been introduced to the field of assisted reproduction and offers egg survival rates, after thawing, that exceed 97%-99%.

The event was concluded with the optimistic message that the medical advances of recent years offer infertile couples safe and effective ways to improve their chances of achieving pregnancy and realize their right to procreate.

Mr. Vasilis Pinakas, Deputy Regional Governor and member of the Board of Directors of the Larissa Medical Association; Ms. Eirini Tziastoudi, representing the Larissa Medical Association, honored the event, which was also broadcast online, with their presence and offered their greetings. In addition, Ms. Evangelia Liakouli, Member of the Parliament of PASOK - Movement for Change of Larissa, offered her greetings.
