Pioneering Percutaneous Closure of Atrial Septal Defect at IASO Thessalias

A pioneering medical procedure for Central Greece was successfully performed at IASO Thessalias, confirming the hospital’s continuously upgraded role at the forefront of modern interventional cardiology.

The procedure involved the percutaneous closure of an atrial septal defect, one of the most common congenital heart diseases. This highly specialized and technically demanding intervention was performed successfully for the first time in the region, exclusively at IASO Thessalias, in its state-of-the-art Hemodynamics Laboratory.

The lead physician of the procedure was Nikos Maggoutis, MD, MSc, PhD, Interventional Cardiologist, Director and Scientific Head of the Hemodynamics Laboratory, in collaboration with a specialized medical team. Specifically, the procedure involved Omiros Chalvatzoulis, Cardiothoracic and Major Vessel Surgeon and Scientific Head of the Cardiothoracic Surgery Department, Anesthesiologist Smaragdi Sarchosi, Cardiologist Argyris Garmpounis, Anesthesiologist Evangelia Neou and the team of specialized technologists and nurses of the Hemodynamics Laboratory at IASO Thessalias. Vasileios Thanopoulos, Associate Professor and Interventional Cardiologist specializing in congenital heart disease with extensive experience in complex transcatheter procedures, also participated.
