Medical ethics and professional conduct: fundamental principles for physicians and nurses

A scientific lecture focusing on medical ethics and professional conduct was held at IASO Thessalias as part of the annual Scientific Lectures 2025–2026 programme. The event explored the ethical principles that guide the daily practice of physicians and nurses.

The speaker was Lazaros Sakkas, MD, ECFMG (USA), DM, PhD (UK), FRCP (UK), Professor Emeritus of Internal Medicine and Rheumatology, Chairman of the Ethics and Professional Conduct Committee of IASO Thessalias and Scientific Director of the Rheumatology Department.

The lecture reviewed the timeless foundations of medical ethics, from the Hippocratic Oath to modern international declarations and professional codes. Key topics included respect for human dignity, patient confidentiality, autonomy and the obligation to provide evidence-based and responsible medical care.

Special attention was given to the physician–patient relationship, informed consent, personal data protection and the importance of effective collaboration between medical and nursing professionals in delivering high-quality healthcare.
