Carotid Artery Disease: modern diagnostic and therapeutic approaches
As part of the IASO Thessalias Scientific Lectures 2025–2026 programme, a lecture focusing on Carotid Artery Disease highlighted the latest developments in diagnosis, risk assessment and treatment of this important vascular condition.
The presentation was delivered by Nektarios K. Galanis, MD, PhD, Vascular Surgeon and Director of the 1st Vascular Surgery Department of IASO Thessalias, Assistant Professor of Medicine and instructor at the Vascular International School. The session was moderated by Dr Apostolos Komnos, Medical Director of IASO Thessalias.
The lecture focused on carotid artery disease as a major risk factor for stroke, one of the leading causes of disability and mortality worldwide. Particular emphasis was placed on early diagnosis through carotid ultrasound (Triplex scanning), risk stratification and the identification of patients who may benefit from intervention.
Participants were also updated on contemporary treatment strategies, including optimal medical management, risk factor modification and advanced surgical and endovascular interventions, underscoring the importance of individualized patient care.
