IASO Children's Hospital: Laboratory Seminar “Assessment and Early Developmental Intervention for High-Risk Neonates and Infants”
PEDIATRIC
The Laboratory Seminar on the topic “Assessment and Early Developmental Intervention for At-Risk Neonates and Infants” will be held on Saturday, May 31st, and Sunday, June 1st, 2025, at 09:00, at IASO Children’s Hospital (37-39 Kifissias Ave, Maroussi, 15123).
The seminar is organized by the Physiotherapy Department of IASO Children’s Hospital in collaboration with the Education Department of RehabCare.
At an early age, a children’s basic needs – sleep, food, and communication – form the foundation for healthy psychomotor development. However, endogenous or exogenous factors such as prematurity or prolonged stay in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) can disrupt this natural process. The aim of the seminar is for participants to be able to understand and interpret the infant’s cues and needs, and to provide techniques and therapeutic strategies that promote smooth development.
Through a practical and experiential framework, participants will have the opportunity to:
- identify deviations in the sensorimotor behavior of preterm infants during their first year of life
- understand the consequences of NICU stay
- formulate therapy goals and intervention programs
- guide parents in integrating therapeutic principles into daily life
- become familiar with key aspects of the physiology of swallowing, the self-pacing technique, side-lying positioning, and the assessment of appropriate feeding equipment (Know your flow)
Other topics will also be covered at the seminar, such as: typical sensorimotor development, the impact of the NICU, principles of early therapeutic intervention, safe feeding and oral motor difficulties, common respiratory conditions and gastroesophageal reflux in neonates and infants.
The Program Coordinator is Mr. Nikolaos Panorios, Physiotherapist - Occupational Therapist, Head, Physiotherapy Department, IASO Children’s Hospital.
