Acknowledging a mother’s priceless offer towards her child and at the same time the indefeasible right of a newborn to breastfeeding – which is the optimal way for exclusive feeding for the first six months of the infant’s life – we, at IASO, put significant efforts in the awareness, consciousness, education and promotion of breastfeeding and try to apply the Ten Steps to its Success.

Namely, we:

  1. Observe a Written Policy according to UNICEF’s and WHO recommendations.
  2. Routinely educate all our Nursing Staff by organizing regular seminars aimed at the acquisition of all the necessary knowledge and skills for the observance of the aforementioned Policy.
  3. Hold Childbirth Education Classes on Breastfeeding in order to timely and responsibly educate and train all future mothers on Breastfeeding and its benefits.
  4. Take care for the early initiation of breastfeeding, thusly establishing lactation and fortifying the emotional bonding between a mother and her infant.
  5. Advise all mothers who must be separated from their newborn for Medical reasons (admission to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit) to continue producing breast milk so that the newborn receives it at the earliest opportunity.
  6. Do not feed the newborns on any other type of food or liquid apart from breast milk, unless otherwise dictated, e.g. on medical grounds or the mother’s wish.
  7. All mothers can have their newborn stay in the same room with them (“Rooming-in Practice”).
  8. We encourage all new mothers to feed their baby whenever their baby longs for it in order to achieve free and unlimited Breastfeeding.
  9. We do not give pacifiers or feeding bottles to the breastfeeding newborn.
  10. We support breastfeeding with a 24/7 Helpline for all mothers discharged from IASO (tel: +30 210 618 4000).

World Health Organization (WHO) and UNICEF, acknowledging the value of Breastfeeding, established the Initiative “Baby-friendly Hospitals”, by setting the Ten Steps to a Successful Breastfeeding.

Scientific lecture on the 1st successful childbirth following uterus transplantation

Prompted by the 1st successful childbirth following uterus transplantation by Professor Mats Brännström’s medical team at the University of Gothenburg in Sweden, the Hellenic Society οf Reproductive Medicine (HSRM), in cooperation with IASO General Maternity and Gynecology Clinic, successfully organized today, Friday 3 July 2015 at 12.30 pm at IASO Clinic, a scientific lecture titled “The 1st successful childbirth following uterus transplantation”. The speech was delivered by Dr. Mats Brännström, Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of Gothenburg in Sweden.

In September 2014, and for the first time in the history of Medicine, a 36-year-old Swedish woman gave birth to a healthy baby following uterus transplantation. According to the researchers, eleven uterus transplantation attempts have been performed worldwide, but this is the first live birth reported. Both the mother and the child enjoy good health and give the hope of childbirth to all women without uterus or with functional uterine abnormalities.

As Professor Mats Brännström stated “This case offers hope to all the women around the world who suffer from sub-fertility which is exclusively caused by the lack of uterus”.

The participation to the lecture was free of charge and the official language was English. Discussion and light meal followed.

The speech was delivered at IASO Clinic’s Events Hall, 37-39 Kifissias Avenue, Maroussi

IASO and IASO Children’s Hospital are once again a step ahead with the establishment of a Home Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition Report, Support and Monitoring Center in order to improve the quality of life of sufferers and their families. It is a revolutionary type of services towards this difficult and sensitive group of patients which includes monitoring, training and management of the nutritional support of home care patients according to strict international protocols.

The Center is headed by Mr. Panagiotis Lagos, Professor of Pediatrics and Chief of IASO Children’s Hospital Medical Services and is in close cooperation with a team of Specialists comprising Messrs Ioanna Panagiotou-Aggelakopoulou, Pediatric-gastroenterologist at IASO Children’s Hospital, Panagiota Kafritsa, Pediatric-gastroenterologist at IASO Children’s Hospital, Fellow at the 1st Department of Pediatrics of the University of Athens and Kostas Siafakas, Pediatric-gastroenterologist at IASO Children’s Hospital and clinical pharmacologist Maria Skouroliakoy, Assistant Professor, Scientific Consultant at the Nutritional Support & Dietetics Center at IASO.

Home Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition programs presuppose the cooperation of the physician and the pharmacologist with specialist nursing staff, biochemists, dieticians and social workers. Each participating patient must be under regular clinical and laboratory monitoring. To conclude, Home Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition requires training not only of the relatives or the caregivers, but also of the patient himself/herself who must actively support the procedure in order to avoid any complications.

The Center operates every first Wednesday of the month from 12:00 to 14:00. For more information, please contact the Nutritional Support & Dietetics Center at IASO at +30 6184095.
