The Intensive Care Unit (ICU) is a dedicated department within IASO that offers life support services to patients in need 24/7.

It consists of 12 beds in total. It has a modern design, while each ICU place is equipped with a special bed, its own ventilator and a patient monitoring system.

The Adult ICU was established to efficiently treat critically ill patients who require special nursing and medical care. Their 24-hour monitoring is performed directly by the ICU staff, with continuous recording of their vital signs, bedside and centrally.

It applies all the latest international protocols for managing critically ill patients, as specified in international conventions and the relevant literature. It addresses cases of all medical specialties, such as Internal Medicine, Pulmonology, Neurology, Surgery and Obstetrics/Gynecology, with full pharmaceutical and mechanical support of vital organs, 24-hour monitoring and 24-hour medical observation.

The ICU is staffed with fully qualified doctors and intensivists, as well as experienced and scientifically competent nurses. Both the medical and the nursing staff actively participate in Greek and international conferences, have received several distinctions and have published articles in Greek and international journals. It works closely with other departments and specialties within the Hospital, aiming to fully address the needs of all hospitalized patients.

All necessary techniques to support the vital signs of hospitalized patients may be applied 24/7. These include:

  • Tracheal intubation
  • Invasive and non-invasive mechanical ventilation
  • Artery, central venous and pulmonary artery catheterization
  • Placement and management of temporary cardiac pacemaker
  • Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR)
  • Pleural effusion drainage
  • Therapeutic and diagnostic bronchoscopy
  • Cricothyrotomy
  • Percutaneous tracheostomy
  • Continuous renal replacement therapy
  • Electrocardiogram and continuous vital sign monitoring
  • Continuous recording and monitoring of hemodynamic parameters, mixed venous oxygen saturation and extravascular lung water using minimally invasive methods
  • Transthoracic echocardiogram, as well as chest, abdominal, vascular and transcranial ultrasound
  • Measurement of lactate, electrolytes, glucose, hemoglobin and hematocrit, and blood gas analysis

Various systems are used to assess the critical condition of patients, such as APACHE, SAPS and SOFA, so as to forecast mortality and morbidity, admission criteria and quality of healthcare provision. It also applies all the ISO & TEMOS quality protocols.

All the ICU staff continuously strive to address the needs of patients and those around them as best as possible, as we understand how hard it is for people to have loved ones in hospital, and especially in an ICU.

We aim to combine utter professionalism with our passion to care for our patients and their families. At the same time, we strive day and night to increase the survival rate of each patient and reduce their required hospitalization time.
