EARLY DIAGNOSIS SAVES LIVES

Which factors are associated with increased risk of breast cancer?

  • Personal history of breast cancer
  • Family history (mother, sister, cousin…) of breast cancer, particularly at a young age
  • Diagnosis of particular breast diseases (e.g. atypical hyperplasia)
  • Evidence of particular genetic mutation

Even though you may belong to none of the above mentioned categories breast cancer may still concern you. Do you know that most women affected by breast cancer have no family history, nor do they belong to any of the high risk groups?

What can I do?

  • Self examination each month from the age of 20 and above
  • Clinical examination by your physician every year.
  • If you are 40 years or older, you must have a mammogram performed every year
  • Gather as much information as possible on your family history.

What is mammogram used for?

  • For the early diagnosis of breast cancer, even when the tumor may not be palpated.
  • Do not forget that the risk from exposure to radiation due to the mammogram is negligible.
